Mesa Falls

Mesa Falls

Description:

The Mesa Falls are another one of the many grand geological wonders in our area. While geologically it may seem mundane compared to some of our other entries, it lacks nothing in beauty and purity. It is possible to sit and watch for hours in wonder. There are few things in nature more soothing than the steady “rush” of falling water. The Mesa Falls are a geological gem that everyone can enjoy.

Geological Significance:

Words to Know

Resistant layers—Some rocks are naturally harder than others. These rocks resist weathering by wind and water.

Undercutting—When a waterfall forms, there is often a resistant layer on the top of the waterfall and weaker rock at the bottom. At the bottom eddies increase the amount of erosion and can create a little cave. There are some areas where you can walk behind a waterfall because of this.

Headwater Erosion—This type of erosion takes place at the top of waterfalls. As the water spills over, it erodes the lip and eventually the lip is eroded away, and the waterfall “moves” upstream toward the headwaters (source of the river).

Gradient—Refers to the slope profile of a river. Rivers tend to have the steepest gradients near the source and level out as the river enters the ocean or a lake. The steeper the slope, the more energy potential and carrying capacity there is in the river.

Geologic Background

Mesa Falls were formed by the normal waterfall formation processes. There was an area of uplift that was more resistant than the surrounding areas and thus it formed a waterfall. The processes of undercutting and headwater erosion may not be clearly visible, but the result of many years of erosion is.

Activites:

Due to the pristine nature of the Falls and the area surrounding, photographing and viewing wildlife and wilfeflowers are extremely rewarding experiences.  However, should your tastes desire a more physical recreation, fishing in one of America’s cleanest waterways is a go-back-in-time experience.

If there’s not time to get out and about, the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway provides an opportunity to experience the beauty of the countryside without leaving the vehicle (though the temptation to get out and smell the wildflowers might prove too much).  With 27 miles of the prettiest countryside around, the trip around its perimeter justifies itself.  Scroll down to the last map on this page to find the map and plan your route!
